Sad 9600GT low CS:S framerates

I recently uprgraded to 9600GTs after having them SLId for about a week one burnt out so I am limping by on one (for now) and even with the loss my rig is more than sufficient to handle CS:S.
So I am stricken by the fact that my framerates sometimes dip down to 10FPS and never above 35FPS anyone have any suggestions?

sounds like a problem with the source engine and that particular card, usually there'll be an update made by valve which becomes available on steam. have you had a look on the steam forums for anyone else having this issue?
Or you could alternatively try my fix - play team fortress 2 instead lol

I might get the orange box, but now I'm slightly concerned that the same thing might happen. What about installing old drivers? could that be a fix?

If you were getting acceptable framerates on an older version of the same driver then perhaps that would be a good place to start.
And i do recommend the orange box, if not for TF2 then definately for Portal. Great collection of games, well worth it

ah that portal

It seems to me that you are definitely having some type of driver issue. I assume that steam will provide a fix......oh and were you experiencing "lower that you might think" FPS when you had them SLi'd? I would assume that CS:S should max FPS 99% of the time with a 9 series card IMO of course since I don't have one lying around to bench
